WHAT ARE WVCs?

WVCs stands for Wildlife-Vehicle Collisions - incidents where vehicles strike animals on roadways. These collisions pose serious risks to both driver safety and wildlife populations, often resulting in vehicle damage and injuries/fatalities for both humans and animals.

WVCs are a growing concern across the United States, with millions of collisions occurring annually, particularly in areas where urban development intersects with natural habitats and migration corridors.

ARE THERE ANY SOLUTIONS?

Yes, there are many proven solutions to reduce WVCs! These include careful infrastructure planning that accounts for wildlife movement, dedicated wildlife crossings like overpasses and underpasses that allow animals to safely traverse roadways, strategic fencing to guide animals toward safe crossing points, and improved roadway lighting in high-risk areas.

Our organization takes a policy-driven approach, working directly with state agencies to embed wildlife safety into driver education at the systemic level. Through our partnerships with departments of public safety and our work on driver handbooks, we're ensuring that awareness of migratory patterns and proper responses to wildlife warning signs become standard knowledge for new (and all) drivers.
